David Baker

David Baker, the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra's Artistic and Musical Director, is internationally famous as a composer, conductor, performer, author, and educator.

Mission

The Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra (SJMO) is the orchestra-in-residence at the National Museum of American History. Our mission is to explore, present, promote, and perpetuate the historical legacy of jazz. We enrich the public's understanding of the character and importance of this unique American treasure by presenting significant jazz masterworks in engaging musical performances, and stimulating educational activities that are based on scholarship and research.

Historical Highlights
SJMO

Since 1990, the SJMO has performed in 9 foreign countries and 26 states, from Alaska to Florida.

In June 1993, the SJMO performed at the White House for the 40th anniversary of the Newport Jazz Festival, conducted by David Baker and Gunther Schuller.

The SJMO played at the 1996 Cultural Olympiad in Atlanta.

In 1999, the SJMO crisscrossed the country presenting concerts in tribute to the 100th anniversary of Duke Ellington's birth and also performed at the prestigious Monterey Jazz Festival in a concert featuring Ellington's Suite Thursday, originally commissioned for the festival.
